Record claimed by German car manufacturer Audi
Audi has claimed the fastest speed record for a self-driving car, demonstrating that its RS7 model reached 149 mph whilst completing a lap of the Hockenheim circuit, outside Frankfurt.
Although Audi demonstrated its efforts to make driverless cars a reality, experts argue there is still a lot of work to be done before they can be brought to the roads.
For example, there are still concerns around safety: completing a circuit of an empty track is different to interacting with moving cars and people on a busy street. Meanwhile, Audi argues that there are a lot of use cases for piloted driving, such as in traffic jams or when the driver is distracted.
