Science at Oktoberfest

Siemens controls the beer pipeline at this year’s event

With millions of people from all around the world enjoying themselves at the Oktoberfest in Munich, someone has to make sure the beer keeps flowing. This year, long-term festival partners Siemens have provided automated solutions to control and monitor the beer pipeline – the only one of its kind worldwide.

On the busiest days, bar staff pour up to 70,000 litres of beer, so reliability is key. In the taprooms, a so-called “Litre-Meter” indicates the exact rate of flow of the beer, like a speedometer. The system sends data on the quantities of beer sold, and bar staff can monitor all data via web browser, tablet PC or smartphone.
