Small businesses urged to prevent cyber crime

by AprilSix Proof

Many SMBs underestimate the threat online crime poses

The Department for Business Innovation and Skills held a roundtable between industry experts and government to create a plan that can help small businesses combat cyber-crime. Too many SMBs currently underestimate the threat of cyber-crime on their profitability, cash flow and reputation.

The roundtable marked the next phase of the government’s Cyber Streetwise campaign which aims to help small businesses protect themselves against online threats.

Key recommendations from the roundtable include:

  • Staff education in online threats
  • Regular software updates
  • Install and use anti-virus software
  • Use complex passwords

Research shows that 60% of small businesses suffered a malicious data breach in the past year and 50% had a serious cyber incident. To help, the government has launched the new Cyber Essentials scheme, which helps businesses protect themselves and certifies them against industry-endorsed criteria.
